MINSK, 11 January (BelTA) - Russia has become Europe's first economy and the world's fifth in terms of purchasing power parity despite sanctions and the fact that "we are being strangled and pressured from every side", Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with entrepreneurs in Russian Far East, TASS has reported.

According to Vladimir Putin, Russia left Germany behind in terms of purchasing power parity and ranks fifth in the world - after China, the United States, India and Japan. "We are number one in Europe," the Russian president said.

"As for the per capita indicator, we need to work harder. So there is work to be done," he noted.

Vladimir Putin said that the Russian government knows its business and works efficiently. However, he pointed out that there are also miscalculations, recalling the abnormal increase in prices for chicken eggs.

The Russian leader also said that the country's GDP growth for 2023 may be higher than the projected 3.5% and could exceed 4%. Meanwhile, the drop in the index amid sanctions in 2022 was 1.2% as opposed to 2.1% originally penciled in.
