Probe into Uber taxi service operation in Belarus

MINSK, 8 February (BelTA) – The operation of the Uber taxi service in Minsk will be analyzed. Minsk Mayor Andrei Shorets gave the relevant instructions during a routine conference of the Minsk City Executive Committee, BelTA has learned.

The Minsk Mayor said: “Minsk taxi drivers believe that Uber enjoys an unfair competitive advantage. It is necessary to take a closer look at the situation. Once the results are ready, the taxi drivers should be informed about them.”

The affordable taxi service UberX went operational in Minsk in February 2016. Uber is a mobile app that allows users to flag down a taxi and pay for taxi or private driver services in over 50 countries across the globe. After using a taxi car the user is billed immediately via the banking card information the app stores.

Many taxi drivers, who do not use the Uber service, have expressed their unhappiness about the arrival of the new competitor. In some countries Uber Company has been fined while some other countries have prohibited all or some of Uber's services. The terms of service the company offers are not compliant with the legislation of some countries that most often require licensing for taxi services. Uber is also accused of dumping prices in comparison with regular drivers.
