Powers, status of Belarusian People's Congress yet to be finalized

MINSK, 28 September (BelTA) - The issues related to the powers and the order of formation of the Belarusian People's Congress, which is planned to be given a constitutional status in the new draft Constitution, will be finalized taking into account the existing proposals and opinions. The issue was one of the most discussed ones at the extended meeting of the Constitutional Commission attended by Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko on 28 September, BelTA has learned.

According to Chairman of the Constitutional Court and the Constitutional Commission Piotr Miklashevich, giving the Belarusian People's Congress a constitutional status means that it will turn into a constitutional and authoritative body. “Today we have had a detailed discussion of how the Belarusian People's Congress should be formed and what powers it should be vested with. A balance should also be preserved in the state power system, so there were no contradictions and substitution of other bodies,” he said.

“A number of proposals have been made. They will need careful study,” said Piotr Miklashevich.
