Political analyst: Marshall Plan made Europe dependent on U.S. economy

MINSK, 19 April (BelTA) – After the launch of the Marshall Plan, the United States has made Europe dependent on its economy, political scientist Vladimir Sergiyenko (Germany) said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
He noted that after the Marshall Plan was launched, the United States began to take over certain sectors of the European economy. They introduced duty-free trade with Europe allowing goods to flow freely into the United States.

“The United States set in motion processes in Europe that tied it to the U.S. economy and developed a dependence on it. Over the years, the European Union has been saddled with the whole thing. I can say that I don't know what U.S.-made products we have in Europe other than digital ones. It's not just social media, but logistics, delivery of goods. Here the United States is ahead,” Vladimir Sergiyenko said. “Back in the 1990s there were American TV sets, cars, textiles in Europe. Now I don't see those in Europe. People in Europe don't even know U.S. brands. Even if there are American brands there, they are made in Europe or China.

Now, with the launch of the U.S. tariffs policy “Trump stuck the red-hot poker into several hornets' nests at once,” the analyst believes. “One of them is undoubtedly Europe. It is not clear how things will pan out. But if this policy weakens the United States or Britain, then BRICS, China and Russia will reap the benefits,” he concluded.
