Polish spy apprehended in Belarus’ Lepel

MINSK, 5 September (BelTA) – Belarus 1 TV channel has revealed details of the detention of a Polish spy in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

Following an intelligence operation by one of Poland's special services, Belarus' State Security Committee (KGB) detained citizens of Belarus and Poland in Lepel. The detained Polish citizen, Grzegorz Gawel, was found to be in possession of a photocopy of a document related to the Belarusian-Russian joint exercise Zapad 2025, marked as “secret”.

A subsequent search revealed that Grzegorz Gawel, born in 1998, lives in Krakow. When asked what tasks he was performing in the Belarusian city of Lepel, Grzegorz Gawel replied: “The task is to obtain information on the topic of the Zapad exercise”. The Polish citizen's personal belongings included U.S. dollars, euros, Bulgarian and Polish currency, Belarusian rubles, and a SIM card from a mobile operator that had been given to him. The SIM card was registered to another person.

There is irrefutable evidence of the espionage activities of the Polish citizen. Just minutes before his detention, he received a secret military document. The entire incident was captured on video.

Via social media, Grzegorz Gawel contacted a Belarusian citizen and recruited him to cooperate on behalf of Polish intelligence services. This cooperation involved the covert collection and provision of classified information, details on command staff, as well as employees of military counterintelligence. The detainee transmitted the obtained data to Polish security forces. In particular, he was collecting secret information on Belarusian military facilities for the Internal Security Agency.

In exchange for transmitting the information he required, Grzegorz Gawel promised to pay the Belarusian citizen money on a monthly basis. On the first occasion, besides financial means, he brought his informant coffee, chocolate, and a mobile phone case designed to block its signal.

Belarusian counterintelligence officers detained the foreign national immediately after he received the secret document. A criminal case has been initiated under Article 358 (Espionage) of the Criminal Code of Belarus. An investigation is underway. Further details will be revealed later.
