Polish expert: Polish elites are unwilling to maintain partner relations with Belarus

MINSK, 6 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Poland should stick to the idea of partnership and good neighborliness, yet Polish elites seem unwilling to do that, Polish politician, political expert and publicist, member of the Polish Sejm of the 5th convocation Mateusz Piskorski told the SB.Belarus Segodnya newspaper, BelTA has learned.

“After Mr. Protasevich' statements in the Belarusian media, the Polish prosecutor's office was supposed to open a criminal case - at least to look into alleged corruption schemes related to the financing of the so-called Belarusian opposition in Poland, because it was about spending budgetary funds. However - and this was quite predictable - the Polish authorities did not respond to these accusations at all. Neither did they comment on the statements of the Belarusian authorities, including those of the president of Belarus, about attempts to interfere in the internal affairs of your country and destabilize the situation in Belarus. Nevertheless, we know very well that some structures like the Belsat TV channel that are operating openly and officially do not even hide their intentions to destabilize the situation in Belarus and stage a color revolution. Yet, unfortunately, we do not know the details of the sources of funding for such activities,” Mateusz Piskorski said.

The Polish political expert recalled that about PLN54 million was allocated from the Polish budget, that is the money of Polish taxpayers, to support the so-called Belarusian House. “The Belarusian House, as we learned from Protasevich and many other Belarusian figures, used the funds meant for destructive activities in Belarus for their own needs. Corruption schemes might be in place here: it is hard to say how much money was really allocated for such activities. We are looking forward to further details about the activities of various structures in Poland. And we really hope that the Belarusian side will put out as much information as possible, and people of Poland will be able to learn where their money goes,” the Polish political expert said.

He deems it necessary to return to all possible types of Poland-Belarus dialogue. “I believe that Belarus is ready for such a dialogue, and this is confirmed by the Belarusian parliamentarians with whom I have spoken recently. Moreover, Belarus does not set any preconditions for this, it is the Polish side that is not yet ready for such a dialogue. And therefore, everything depends on the readiness of Polish politicians to resume good-neighborly dialogue in the spirit of our existing interstate agreements. After all, we should stick to the idea of partnership and good neighborliness. But so far the Polish elites do not show the necessary political will for this. Polish people, on the other hand, are hardly interested in international affairs today: the existing domestic issues are now much more important for them,” Mateusz Piskorski concluded.
