MINSK, 15 June (BelTA) - The Belarusian people have never rewritten history, the truth about the Great Patriotic War is sacred for us, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at the plenary session of the international parliamentary conference “Historical Memory: The Great Victory Gained by Unity”, BelTA has learned.
“The truth about the Great Patriotic War is sacred for us. The Belarusian people cherish the memory of the feat of arms of the Soviet soldiers, the courageous resistance of partisans and underground fighters. The Belarusian people have never rewritten history, never turned traitors and executioners into heroes and victims. We have never torn down monuments, memorials and graves of soldiers who died for the freedom of their homeland. To prevent any attempts to distort the outcome of the Great Patriotic War, Belarus has officially recognized the genocide of the Belarusian people, committed by Nazi criminals and their accomplices in the war years. Nazism is a tool to destroy the nation through the destruction of its traditions and spiritual health held on the foundation of historical memory. This is the foundation that the West tried to get to in the 1940s and continues to do it in the 2020's,” said Roman Golovchenko.
According to the prime minister, 2022 is a special year in the history of the Belarusian state. “It has been declared the Year of Historical Memory by the decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus. The document also states the purpose of this decision which is to form an objective attitude of the society to the historical past, to preserve and strengthen the unity of the Belarusian people. In Belarus, which lost its every third citizen in the Great Patriotic War, it is clearly understood that the Year of Historical Memory gives the society and especially the youth an opportunity to reconsider the price paid by the Belarusians for centuries-long desire to live and work peacefully in their native land,” he stressed.
In continuation of the consistent policy to preserve the truth about the heroism of our ancestors, to form the historical and state worldview, to strengthen the historical, cultural and spiritual-ethnic community of the Belarusians, the National Council for Historical Policy has been established under the Belarus President Administration.
“The country develops programs on perpetuation of those killed defending the Motherland and remembrance of the victims of wars. At present there are about 8,000 military cemeteries in the Republic of Belarus, where more than 2 million people are buried,” Roman Golovchenko said.
