Plans to set up book culture research center at IAAS

MINSK, 26 February (BelTA) – Plans are in place to set up an international book culture research center at the International Association of Academies of Sciences (IAAS). The relevant protocol was signed during the 11th session of the Book Publishing Council at the IAAS in Minsk on 26 February, BelTA learned from the press service of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.

The center will study reading as an important socializing factor, draw up recommendations, develop new forms of work adjusted to today's realities, and popularize reading especially among young people. The Book Publishing Council at the IAAS will play a special role in this work,” the press service noted.

The council promotes innovative approaches, new ideas, contributes to the research space and new research horizons, and, equally important, facilitates dialogue between the professional community and mass audience, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, head of the International Association of Academies of Sciences Vladimir Gusakov said at the session.

A ceremony to celebrate the winners of the Likhachev Award Contest of the International Association of Academies of Sciences was held on the sidelines of the session. Thirteen scientific representatives of Russia and Belarus were honored for the best scientific works that have made a major contribution to national culture, science of book, study of history, theory and contemporary issues of book culture. The contest is held every three years.

The International Association of Academies of Sciences was established in Kiev in 1993. In 2017 the NASB assumed organizational and methodological functions of the association. Chairman of the NASB Presidium Vladimir Gusakov was elected head of the association. The IAAS Council is the supreme governing body of the IAAS. As of January 2019 the association included 15 full-fledged and eight associate members and operated 19 scientific councils.
