Patriotic youth forum of Union State kicks off at Belarusian State University

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – The patriotic youth forum of the Union State has kicked off at Belarusian State University (BSU), BelTA has learned.

The event has brought together over 60 students from Belarus and Russia: students of Belarusian State University, the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Ural State Law University and St. Petersburg State University. The young people were welcomed by State Secretary of the Union State Dmitry Mezentsev.

“We are pleased that universities have responded to our invitation to discuss historical truth and the defense of historical memory. This is not a lecture from adults to youth. First of all, we will answer the questions from young people. They want to know what patriotism and civic position are for us. But in turn, we want to know how they would have acted if the events of 1941-1945 or of 1812 had happened, when Belarusian regiments defended the common Fatherland,” he said.

He noted that the conversation will be on an equal footing. “It will be a sincere dialogue about what prevents Belarus and Russia from developing faster, why the West is so aggressive, and whether we have the right to give up and retreat from our plans, intentions, and Union State construction. Especially in the wake of the Supreme State Council meeting when the presidents of our countries Aleksandr Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin outlined a new stage of not only economic, but also cultural and humanitarian integration, cooperation, and movement forward,” the state secretary said.

The forum was attended by Belarusian First Deputy Education Minister Aleksandr Bakhanovich and BSU Rector Andrei Korol.

The book “There is no statute of limitations... Crimes of fascism against the peoples of the Soviet Union during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” was presented at the event. The book was prepared with the personal participation of Dmitry Mezentsev. It is based on the criminal case into the Belarusian and Soviet peoples' genocide, the historical facts - investigations of the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus, decisions by the courts of St. Petersburg and Leningrad Oblast.

The forum will include a roundtable on youth policy. The participants will also visit the BSU Museum of Earth Science and the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War History.
