Paris Prosecutor’s Office: Durov arrested on 12 criminal counts

MINSK, 27 August (BelTA) - Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has been charged in France with 12 crimes, the Izvestia newspaper reports with reference to the press service of the prosecutor's office in Paris.

In particular, Durov is accused as an accomplice in the administration of an online platform to carry out illegal transactions, storage and distribution of child pornographic images, acquisition, transportation and transfer of narcotic substances, provision without legal grounds of equipment or data designed or adapted to access the operation of an automated data processing system, and fraud.

In addition, the Telegram founder is charged with refusing to provide, upon request of authorized authorities, information necessary for the implementation and use of legally authorized wiretapping, criminal association with a view to committing a crime, money laundering, providing cryptology services aiming to ensure confidentiality without certified declaration, providing cryptology tools not solely ensuring authentication or integrity monitoring without prior declaration, importing cryptology tools ensuring authentication or integrity monitoring without prior declaration.

A statement from the Paris Prosecutor's Office indicates that Pavel Durov was detained on 24 August in France as part of an investigation launched on 8 July 2024. The extended detention period for the Telegram founder expires on 28 August.

“The period of detention was extended on 25 August 2024 by the investigating judge and may continue for up to 96 hours (i.e. until 28 August 2024), taking into account the procedure applied in connection with the above-mentioned crimes related to organized crime,” the prosecutor's office said in a statement.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Russian diplomats have made all possible efforts on their part in the case of the detention of the Telegram founder. The UN, in turn, said it was following the situation with the detention of Pavel Durov in France, but was not yet ready to comment on the topic.
