Opinion: West does not care about human rights, ready to use tanks against migrants

MINSK, 8 November (BelTA) - The collective West does not care about human rights and is ready to use tanks against migrants, expert with the Belaya Rus public association Piotr Petrovsky told BelTA.

"Belarus honors all its obligations. We have no problems with migrants in the country; there is no hostile attitude towards them. They feel quite free. Meanwhile the Polish government is violating all its obligations and values that it undertook when joining the EU in 2004. For example, under the Dublin Agreement Poland has undertaken not to use force, the army or other methods but accept relevant applications from migrants and consider whether they meet the specific criteria for refugee status. And then, if migrants are recognized as refugees, it is to provide them asylum, and if they are not recognized, then to deport them to the host country at its own expense," Piotr Petrovsky said.

In the meantime, according to him, Poland has been violating these EU requirements. "We have seen attempts to aggravate the situation, attempts to commit acts of aggression by Poland against Belarus. This is happening through militarization, through the deployment of various kinds of armed units literally 40km from Belarus, which we are concerned about. These actions cannot be considered as peaceful ones. On the contrary, they will increase the degree of militarization of the region and the number of provocations, in which the Polish leadership is interested. It is through provocations that Poland is trying to increase its importance in the region, draw more attention to itself, especially from its ally, the United States. Washington is increasingly concentrating its forces and interests in Southeast Asia in the confrontation with China. It is very difficult to predict what provocations and actions Warsaw will resort to in order to keep itself in the sight of its ally,” the expert said.

Piotr Petrovsky drew attention to the paradoxical nature of the situation. “The overwhelming majority of NATO countries declare their commitment to human rights values. In the name of human rights they bombed Libya, Iraq, and Syria, arranged the Arab Spring. In the name of human rights they killed local people, destroyed states, peace and stability. Now local people are migrating from the states the West has destroyed to the countries that talk so much about human rights and liberalism,” he stressed. “The second paradox is that these countries, so concerned about human rights, now turn a blind eye to human rights or violate human rights of migrants. It is obvious today. The collective West has discredited its image of an advocate of human rights. To them, human rights are nothing more than an ideological pretext under the guise of which they interfere in other countries' affairs, engage in aggression and neo-colonial expansion. The collective West does not just violate human rights. It simply does not care about them and is ready to use tanks against ordinary migrants seeking asylum in EU countries,” he added.
