Opinion: Ukraine peace talks can drag on for years

MINSK, 11 April (BelTA) – Ukraine peace process can go on for many years, historian Yevgeny Spitsyn said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.

Speaking about the settlement of the Ukraine conflict, the historian remarked that the parties have just begun to map out the post-war world. “Of course, such things cannot be done overnight, as Trump wants it. It is difficult for me to say how long these negotiations will take. They can drag on for many, many years. It seems to me that it will not be possible to end this military conflict and to strike a deal that would suit everyone in 2025 or in the coming years,” Yevgeny Spitsyn said.

The expert emphasized that Russia's main task in this situation is to secure a better negotiating position for subsequent agreements. “What does it mean? They need to press ahead. This is the logic of war. This is not about 'Russia's aggression' or Kiev's inability to negotiate. Kiev is of little interest to anyone, as a matter of fact. It is irrelevant,” he believes.

Yevgeny Spitsyn also emphasized that Ukraine does not have its own defense industry. “In today's world, this is what determines victory on the battlefield. Not even general mobilization. And if the Americans and Europeans discontinue supplies to Kiev, the war will end in two weeks. Putin has spoken about this, and so has Trump. This is an absolutely correct way of putting it,” the historian is sure.

The bottom-line is that Kiev has nothing behind it: “Stalin once famously said: how many divisions does the Vatican have? The same here: how many divisions does Kiev have?”
