Opinion: Today's European leaders are controllable political technology creatures

MINSK, 4 June (BelTA) – Today's European leaders are absolutely manageable political technology creatures, Russian public figure, historian, and political scientist Boris Yakemenko said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

“There are no political leaders in Europe of the caliber of Chirac, de Gaulle, Margaret Thatcher, and even Merkel. Those people were really capable of something big, hence the nostalgia for them. In order to unite huge masses of completely different people, you have to be laser-focused only on this task,” said Boris Yakemenko.

According to the political scientist, today's leaders of European states are merely political technology creatures that are absolutely controllable. “They represent the interests of certain elites and do their bidding. They cannot do anything on their own and are afraid to break the established rules,” he remarked.

Boris Yakemenko added that the leaders of European countries could not care less about the interests, problems or daily travails of their own people. The task of such politicians is to complete their term and retire to enjoy the benefits they are entitled to as former presidents or prime ministers.

“Most importantly, they know: no one will call them to task. No one will even initiate a lawsuit regarding the squandering of public funds or flawed state policy. It must feel wonderful to know that someone else will be held responsible,” the political expert concluded.
