Opinion: The unity of Belarusian people should not suffer because of outside pressure

MOSCOW, 9 August (BelTA) – First and foremost, the unity of the Belarusian people should not be destroyed from outside after the end of the presidential election campaign in Belarus, First Deputy Chairperson of the TV and Radio Broadcasting Organization (TRO) of the Union State Lyudmila Kovaleva told BelTA.

“We must understand: we are all different, we have different points of view, different political views, someone speaks Belarusian, someone speaks Russian. We must also understand that we have our country, our Motherland. Earlier, when someone said ‘I love Belarus', that sounded snobbish. Today we understand that it is not pathos, it is normal for any Belarusian. Unless we all understand this, there will be nothing good. If we do not see the experience of our neighbors, I would not like us to become such an experience ourselves,” Lyudmila Kovaleva said.

Lyudmila Kovaleva believes that today Belarusian citizens are choosing the way the relations between Belarus and Russia will develop. “These relations are also tested today. We can talk a lot about the candidates and their attitude to the Union State and Russia. There will be no Union State but for one exception. Only one candidate has a position on the Union State. Yes, this position is tough. Yes, it is possible only with Belarus preserving sovereignty,” she said.

Lyudmila Kovaleva also touched upon the situation with 33 Russians, members of the Wagner private military group, detained in Belarus: “I would not like this situation to be an unpleasant memory for ordinary Russians in respect to Belarus, its President and Belarusians. Russians have no one closer than we.”

The first deputy head of TRO said that she voted for her Belarus today. “I am proud of the things that someone is trying to destroy today. These are stability and mutual understanding. I will not list the social facilities built in Belarus, our roads, our cleanness, our products. It is more difficult to say which things in Belarus I do not take pride in,” she said.
