Opinion: New Constitution should meet modern challenges

MINSK, 20 December (BelTA) – The amended Constitution should stay current with the time, Dean of the Economics and Law Faculty of Mogilev State University, Candidate of Political Sciences, Associate Professor Dmitry Rogovtsov said commenting on the outcomes of the opinion poll “Belarus. A Vision of the Future”, BelTA informs.

According to the poll, 58.7% of Belarusians support the need for Constitutional amendments.

“It should be noted that the president suggested amending the Constitution even before the events of 2020. I believe that the events of 2020 prompted government agencies to consider amending the current Constitution. But in this case, too, the initiative came primarily from the state. It was the president who came up with initiatives to hold all kinds of dialogue platforms and discussions where various parties could have a say. Opposition parties were also invited. Some of them even contributed their views. In this case I see that people's needs match the capabilities of the authorities,” Dmitry Rogovtsov said.

The expert emphasized that the 1996 Constitution responded to the needs of a transitional society and state. “Now we have a well-established, independent, sovereign state that must meet new challenges of the modern era, first of all, the challenges of the information society,” he added.
