Opinion: Need for rational use of energy is reaching global scale

MINSK, 22 February (BelTA) - The need for the rational use of energy resources is reaching global scale, Vitaly Kretsky, Deputy Chairman of the State Committee for Standardization (Gosstandart) of Belarus - Director of the Department of Energy Efficiency, told the media ahead of the committee's collegium meeting on 22 February, BelTA has learned.

“Today, under the current conditions, the issues of rational use of energy resources are reaching global scale. Leaders of the states are concerned about the economy to develop sustainably both now and in the future. This requires appropriate reserves of energy resources. Energy resources, which are available now, should be used rationally,” Vitali Kretsky said.

According to him, Belarus has been working in this direction for more than 30 years. “Once Belarus gained independence, the head of state clearly defined the tasks - to increase the level of energy efficiency and energy independence of the economy,” he said.

The country is implementing its sixth state program on energy saving. “Over the three years of its implementation, all target indicators have been met. We have already achieved almost 2 million tonnes of fuel equivalent in terms of energy resources saving, which is actually 80% of the minimum threshold of the five-year target. The share of local energy resources is over-fulfilled: with the target of 16%, we have made it 17.4%, even taking into account the commissioning of BelNPP,” the director of the department said.
