"On Point"
MINSK, 25 June (BelTA) – After the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO's existence was no longer justified, historian Yevgeny Spitsyn said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.
“The Americans cannot just slam the door and leave. They need to find some reasons to withdraw, including from the European continent. By the way, in this case Europe may or may not be an adversary of the United States of America, but it is certainly not its ally. And I would not be surprised if the Americans walk away from the NATO bloc. After all, one must understand the rationale behind the creation of NATO. First of all, it was designed to control Germany, in particular the growth of revanchist and militaristic sentiments there. On the other hand, NATO was created as a military and political challenger to the Soviet Union and the countries of people's democracy in post-war Europe,” Yevgeny Spitsyn said.
At that time, the existence of the North Atlantic Alliance was justified. The world was divided into two systems that were locked in a tough confrontation with each other. The arena of possible hostilities was primarily Europe and the North Atlantic. That is why the bloc was called the North Atlantic Alliance.
As long as the Soviet Union and the socialist camp were on the European political map, the existence of this bloc was justified, the historian continued. After the collapse of the USSR, this bloc lost its raison d'être. So NATO supporters used every trick in the book to convince the average citizen that this bloc had to be preserved and financed, Yevgeny Spitsyn said.
