Opinion: Failure to bring people to the street proves credibility of Lukashenko's approval rating

MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) – Another failure to make people take to the streets has proved the credibility of the findings of the large-scale opinion poll and the absolute support for the national leader, Nikolai Shchekin, PhD of Philosophy, Head of the Sociology of Public Administration Department at the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, said in an interview with BelTA.

“Now it's time to start realistically assessing what is happening in the world and getting rid of political illusions about partnerships between countries and fair competition. It is obvious that the cruelty of Western elites towards their citizens reveals the true face of the ‘civilized' West whose impunity and claims to global domination cause a lot of problems on planet Earth and are pushing it to a real war. Speaking about the preservation of the nation and its sovereignty, one cannot belittle the historical role of the Union State (the Treaty establishing the Union of Belarus and Russia was signed on 2 April 1997). The main threat to the current model of integration in the post-Soviet space stems from the desire of political elites of a number of countries, members of the European Union, to retain the global project of the colonization of non-European states. In this regard, the Union State played a decisive role in preserving the national identity of Belarus. We all got an opportunity to realize the true potential of the Union State, which is seen as the only mechanism to assert the intrinsic value of Slavic culture and to preserve the Belarusian statehood at epoch-making stages of development,” the analyst said.

According to Nikolai Shchekin, the real potential of the country was revealed during the widespread public discussion of constitutional reform, political parties, social guarantees, public administration, historical truth and memory, values, the role and place of state and public associations, the quality of life, national security and social security, and youth policy. Belarus is now a single nationwide dialogue platform, where everyone can and should speak out and contribute their proposals.

“The main things in this context are: first, the president has changed the country over the years of independence and opened new horizons for unifying the nation through common values. Second, the Belarusian people made a conscientious decision on the format of choosing the head of state and interacting with him as a national leader, which set the evolutionary vector of Belarus' development. Therefore, the Belarusian People's Congress with the values and doctrines that it declared has become the foundation of the Belarusian development model, and challenged the global community. The sovereignty of the nation cannot be ensured without the protection and upholding of its national values. Much remains to be done to protect historical truth and memory. And even the shameless decision to disqualify Belarus from the Eurovision Song Contest should not affect the nation's efforts and progress to fulfill its tasks and goals. The competition became the European ‘morality' inquisition committee. The country's readiness for such a turn testifies to the strength of the nation's spirit. I am sure we will overcome this negative and disgusting step on the part of the West. I think it will be right, if all of us, regardless of our music preferences, support our group Galasy ZMesta. In this regard, the Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk festival is the most civilized global festival brand with fair competition of true professionals. The festival has already proved its openness and impartiality to the whole world, and also guarantees fair treatment of its participants,” the expert said.

According to Nikolai Shchekin, this year and last year saw many momentous events that continue to have an impact on the country's development.

“We have a lot of work ahead - Victory Day, the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War, Independence Day, Slavianski Bazaar, the determination of the Day of National Unity, a referendum. These dates and events in the Year of National Unity acquire a special spiritual and moral meaning for Belarusian people. Another failure of fugitives and the fifth column to urge people to take part in unauthorized rallies and lawlessness confirmed the credibility of the findings of the large-scale opinion poll commissioned by BelTA. They also show the unconditional support of the national leader, Aleksandr Lukashenko. I am convinced that it will not take long before skeptics will see that all democratic procedures were observed during the presidential election, and the subsequent developments steered by social networks are just a well-planned provocative project which purpose is to destroy the Slavic unity and the Belarusian nation,” the expert concluded.
