Opinion: Decision on refugees is made without Poland, Baltic states

MINSK, 16 November (BelTA) - The decision on refugees is made without Poland and the Baltic States, analyst of the Belarusian Institute of Strategic Research Aleksei Avdonin said in an interview with Alfa Radio, BelTA learned from sb.by.

One of the topics for discussion was a telephone conversation between Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko and Germany's acting Chancellor Angela Merkel. The expert stressed that the problem at the border is no longer the issue between the Polish police and the refugees only. The issue is being addressed at the international level - between such countries as Germany, Belarus and Russia.

“First of all, the conversation shows that we can solve problems in a civilized manner. It opens up great prospects for further dialogue and cooperation. The conversation between Lukashenko and Merkel was not beneficial for the collective West and the overseas decision-making center. Everyone is focused on the fact that the dialogue and rhetoric should be built with the Polish authorities or the Baltic states. We can see however that the decision on refugees is made without Poland and the Baltic states,” Aleksei Avdonin said.

The analyst is convinced that the Poles, in fact, have become hostages of this game themselves. “We can see that Poland and the Baltic states have in fact confirmed their status as a limitrophe state, for which the decision is taken from over the ocean. With regard to refugees, Poland acted in violation of the Geneva Convention and other international agreements. It could do so by invoking the support of its big brother, the United States and the Anglo-Saxon world in general. They were the ones who gave hope to the Polish leadership and the Baltic states that they would be supported, that there would be no pressure from Brussels. We could see how Poland sabotaged certain decisions. They are focused on undermining the European Union. The key EU countries - Germany, Italy and France - are not interested in a state that has always been on subsidies, destroying the work and efforts of important and significant historical figures. No one will destroy the EU for the sake of Poland's position,” said Aleksei Avdonin.

According to the expert, after realizing what Poland's actions could lead to, Germany began an active dialogue with Belarus and Russia.
