MINSK, 16 February (BelTA) – The majority of Belarusians did not support the coup because of a smart social policy, Yelena Lazareva, a delegate of the 6th Belarusian People's Congress, Chairperson of the Board of the Union of Belarusians of Latvia, told the SB. Belarus Segodnya newspaper, BelTA informs.
“When I was on Latvian television and radio, I kept saying that we are proud of the achievements of Belarus, a single social and economic system that prioritizes people, their health, education, employment, prosperity and quality of life. I am delighted with your excellent natural food products. You have well-developed medicine and education, and information technology. You have retained the manufacturing industry, which is now the mainstay of the domestic economy. When people in Latvia ask me why the attempt to overthrow the government failed in Belarus, I answer: the majority of Belarusians did not support and will never support the coup because of a smart social policy,” she added.
According to her, the Union of Belarusians of Latvia has over a thousand people in its ranks and 15 public associations in various cities. They introduce people of Latvia to the rich cultural and historical heritage of Belarusians, folk art and Belarusian traditions.
“People in Latvia know and respect us. We have about 50 sister cities, both states have excellent transit potential, a large amount of cargo is transported by rail from Belarus to Latvia, to Latvian ports. I would like to wish Belarusian people progress and prosperity. The slogan of the Belarusian People's Congress “Unity. Development. Independence” describes the way Belarus is going. It will be difficult to develop without the unity of the society, and it will be impossible to maintain independence without development,” Yelena Lazareva concluded.
