Opinion: Constitutional reform should foster social progress

MINSK, 11 March (BelTA) – Amendments to the Constitution should be aimed at social progress and modernization of the society, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklashevich told reporters after the announcement of the final part of the Address of the Constitutional Court to the President and the National Assembly, BelTA has learned.

While working on amendments to the Constitution, the Constitutional Court analyzed the changing public relations, compared the constitutional promises and reality and studied over 50 constitutions of other countries. This resulted in a number of proposals.

“We sought not to undermine the principle of stable constitutional development. We need to retain the provisions that have proved to be instrumental in maintaining peace and calm, fostering economic growth and social development. Generally speaking, amendments to the Constitution should promote social progress and modernization of the society and the further dynamic development of our country,” Piotr Miklashevich said.

At the same time, he noted that over the past quarter of a century Belarus has been steadily developing within the framework of the Constitution, thus maintaining its sovereignty and independence.

In order to improve the existing Constitution, the government set up a commission incorporating MPs, representatives of the government and other agencies, researchers. In addition to the proposals put forward by the Constitutional Court, the commission will analyze other views.
