Opinion: By fighting mythical threats the West fights against prosperity of their people

MINSK, 18 May (BelTA) – The struggle of the West against mythical threats has turned into a struggle against the prosperity of their people, Nikolai Shchekin, Head of the Sociology of Public Administration Department at the Sociology Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, told a BelTA correspondent.

“Today we see that the struggle of the collective West against mythical threats has turned into a struggle against the prosperity of their people. Amidst the militant rhetoric against Belarus, the leadership of Poland and the Baltic countries in fact are leaving their people high and dry. Moreover, ordinary Europeans became hostages of the sanctions against Belarus imposed by European countries. The political elites of Poland and the Baltic states criticized us so hard for our model of a welfare state supported by Aleksandr Lukashenko that they themselves did not notice how the whole situation backfired on them,” Nikolai Shchekin said.

The political scientist noted that no one wants to admit that the sanctions produced a boomerang effect. “The economies of the Baltic countries and Poland have been undermined so seriously that no propaganda can hide it anymore. Food and energy are becoming more expensive. Up to 80% of the population of these countries is on the verge of poverty. The prices for food staples alone rose by an average of 400%, and utilities bills skyrocketed by up to 600%. If people cannot afford using electricity and water as much as they need and risk to freeze to death, then either the civilized world has gone crazy, or the rulers of these countries have decided to exterminate their peoples in order to hide their corrupt activities. The agro-industrial complex of the West is being destroyed, the financial system cannot handle a tenfold increase in prices for petroleum products and gas. The criminal actions of the leadership of the Western European countries have brought their states to the brink of extermination. In this situation, more and more people from the West start to envy Belarus. The well-being of people in Belarus has become an unbearable psychological burden for Western European elites. And this is just the beginning. It is obvious that the so-called economic miracle of the West entirely relied on cheap energy and corruption. Now the moment of truth has come,” he said.
