Vitebsk was liberated from the Nazi invaders on 26 June 1944, on the third day after the start of the Belarusian offensive operation Bagration, one of the largest military operations of the Great Patriotic War. The long-awaited freedom was brought to the city by the 39th Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front and the 43rd Army of the 1st Baltic Front.
