MINSK, 18 October (BelTA) – The number of large families in Belarus has increased by 70% in recent years, BelTA learned from Yelena Komlik, consultant of the Population, Gender and Family Policy Office of the Labor and Social Security Ministry.
"According to the 2019 census, there were 1.143 million families raising children under the age of 18 in the country. The average family size in Belarus is 3.6 people. During the inter-census period from 2009 to 2019, the number of families raising two children grew by 12.6%. Nowadays, every third family brings up two children. The number of large families has reached a record high, up by almost 70%. The country keeps this tendency in all regions. As of 1 October, a total of over 123,000 families raised three or more children. The largest number of them lives in Brest Oblast (over 25,000) and Minsk Oblast (nearly 22,000). It should be noted that the majority of large families (80%) raises three children," Yelena Komlik said.
"Strong family, strong nation is one of the pillars of the Belarusian society. Belarusians highly value the family: 98% of the population consider the family to be the most important part of their life. About 80% of the total population of the country live in families," Yelena Komlik added.

There are families in the country that bring up ten or more children. Among the leaders are Brest Oblast (16 families), Grodno Oblast and Minsk Oblast (seven families with ten children in each region). The largest family in Belarus raises 15 children and lives in Minsk Oblast.
