New Belarusian National History Museum set to open in 2026

MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – The construction of a new building for the Belarusian National History Museum is expected to be completed in 2026, Minsk Mayor Vladimir Kukharev told the media following the meeting hosted by the Belarusian president on 6 September, BelTA has learned.

The National History Museum will be located in the Tsentralny District of Minsk within the area of Pobeditelei Avenue, Orlovskaya Street and the Svisloch River. The People's Unity Park will be built here to become part of the open water-green space of the city. The project is set to be completed in 2026 to mark People’s Unity Day which is celebrated on 17 September.

The new building of the National History Museum will have the shape of the map of Belarus. The exposition of the museum will boast exhibits and information about the history of the Belarusian lands from ancient times to the present.

At the meeting, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized the importance of showing the history of Belarus honestly and objectively and making the museum exposition a source of pride for the country. The final look of the museum, the park, and especially the exposition is still to be finalized, including taking into account today’s discussion of the matter with the head of state. One of the main requirements is ensure the project is not overloaded - everything in it must make sense. The president instructed to make the most use of Belarusian products and materials in the construction project.

“The project has got support and the work will be continued. All the present [at the meeting] voiced their opinions. We plan to start designing the museum in the near future for the construction to commence at the start of the next year. We are set to involve construction enterprise of Minsk, design organizations in order to design a museum which will beautify our country. The museum’s completion and commissioning are targeted for 2026. The park on the grounds will be landscaped to create a full-fledged complex ensemble,” the Minsk mayor said.

The project will complete the look of the area, which is already called the quarter of Belarusian statehood, which also includes the Palace of Independence, the Supreme Court, and the State Flag Square.

“It will be the only completed complex to symbolize Belarusian independence. I think that the museum, which will also be a highlight on this territory, will be naturally blended into the existing ensemble. We have done everything necessary to ensure the museum will meet the most modern standards. Specialists had visited various museums in the People's Republic of China, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan to study their experience. Our museum can become one of the world’s best, as we have a very rich history” Vladimir Kukharev said.
