BREST, 22 October (BelTA) - The major renovation of the Courage Monument at the Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex is planned to be completed in November, Sergei Kruk, the lead engineer of the Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex, told BelTA.
Restoration and museification work is being carried out at the Brest Fortress under a project of the Union State of Belarus and Russia. The major renovation of the Courage Monument began in the middle of this summer. The main monument was erected between 1968 and 1971. It is a complex architectural structure, both inside and out. The reinforced concrete structure measures 30 by 54 meters and consists of approximately 200 parts.
“Before starting the work, we carried out an inspection to identify defects and nuances. The repair is routine. We did practically the same thing 20 years ago. We were prepared and had learned from the experience of the previous major renovation,” Sergei Kruk said.
Industrial climbers are working on the site. The primary height where the work is being carried out is 24-26 meters. Some specialists are working directly on the monument while others are assisting them from below. Another team is handling repairs inside the structure.
"Work is underway to apply a special protective coating, which will simultaneously seal all microcracks and create a solid, thin shell, allowing us to proceed to the next stage which is painting,” the lead engineer explained. “Prior to this, the surface was cleaned, defects were identified and it treated with bioprotection. Inside, a team is engaged in reinforcing and preparing the metal framework.” For instance, approximately 2 tonnes of special paint will be needed to restore the external appearance of the Courage Monument. Provided weather is good, all work will be completed in November.
Overall, the Union State project for Brest Fortress includes 11 planned activities. Restoration work is also underway on other facilities within the memorial complex that is gearing up for a big historical anniversary. 2026 will mark the 85th anniversary of the heroic defense of the citadel on the Bug River.
