GRODNO, 7 February (BelTA) – More than 305,000 people visited the Grodno State Museum of History and Archeology last year, 196,000 of whom toured the Old Castle that has become one of Grodno's calling cards, BelTA learned from the museum.
The museum staff conducted about 4,500 excursions for 52,000 visitors in 2024.
“The Old Castle is very popular among locals and numerous tourists. During the high season you can often see queues of people wanting to see the exhibition,” said Yuri Kiturko, Director of the Grodno State Museum of History and Archeology. “We are currently working on an exposition project for the castle, and Grazhdanproekt is working on a project to restore the castle and re-purpose it to be a museum. Two dozen rooms of the castle will be equipped, for example, the king's bedroom and study, the royal hunting hall, the portrait hall, the hall displaying the castle's history starting from the 16th century, and the Gothic hall,” he remarked.
The museum is now acquiring exhibits for the halls. Archaeological finds and archival materials will also be on display here.
When asked about the museum's most important projects in 2024, Yuri Kiturko named participation in the My Belarus exhibition at the Minsk International Exhibition Center, an exhibition in the Palace of the Republic as part of the Belarus - My Song national festival, a joint exhibition with the Smolensk Fortress state museum “Fortresses of the Great Northern War”, an exhibition dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Belarus' liberation. Currently, the Grodno State Museum of History and Archeology is preparing an exposition for the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. It will display a collection of 100 photographs depicting Grodno during the war years. They have recently been acquired by the museum.
