National History Museum showcases Belarusian ex-libris in Moscow

MINSK, 6 September (BelTA) – The Belarusian National History Museum has displayed the Belarusian Ex-Libris exhibition as part of the 32nd Moscow International Book Fair, BelTA learned from the museum.

Among the authors are Yury Yakavenka, Andrei Yaroshevich, Fyodor Shurmelev, Aleksandr Ulybin, Hanna Tsikhamirava-Yardanava, Yaugeniya Timashenka, Volha Tsiareshchanka, and many more.

The word "ex-libris" in Latin means from books, i.e. a bookmark. Originally it consisted of the initials of the owner of the library and was glued or printed on the front of the book to indicate the owner. Over time, ex-libris became an exquisite art genre and a collector's item.

Belarusian graphic artists working in this genre have long ago become widely known in the international arena. Belarusian ex-libris is kept in the collections of libraries and connoisseurs from many countries, including Japan, Australia, Great Britain, China, the United States, and Belgium. The works of the artists are diverse in composition and manner of performance. All of them, however, are united by the highest artistic level and a virtuoso technique of printing graphics. The works on show impress with their complexity and abundance of themes. They give the opportunity to learn about the mythology of different nations, to take a different look at biblical themes. They immerse the viewer in the world of children's fairy tale and, undoubtedly, cause admiration for the fantasy and skill of the artist.

Artists working in the ex-libris genre are in high demand. There are numerous awards and diplomas of the most prestigious international exhibitions and contests of ex-libris in the collection of Belarusian artists. Their names are well known both in Belarus and abroad. The exhibition project has been implemented with the support of the Information Ministry and the Culture Ministry of Belarus.
