MINSK, 20 November (BelTA) - The decision to supply anti-personnel mines to Ukraine is a violation of the balance of power. Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces - First Deputy Minister of Defense of Belarus Pavel Muraveiko told reporters, BelTA has learned.
An international conference "Applied aspects of scientific activities in defense and security of the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization" opened in Minsk on 20 November.
The chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces emphasized that such events are not held for the sake of appearances, they are necessitated by the reality on the ground. “Look around. Today, the geopolitical situation is clearly deteriorating, strategic instability is growing, and the inability of international institutions to influence ongoing processes is becoming increasingly evident. It is no secret that the confrontation between West and East has reached a hot phase,” said Pavel Muraveiko.
He added that tensions are rising as a result of irresponsible political moves, such as the use of Ukrainian and international mercenaries in attacks on Kursk Oblast, permission to use long-range systems against civilian infrastructure deep within Russia, and the decision to supply anti-personnel mines to the Kiev regime. “We cannot ignore these developments, because they seriously affect the security of Belarus and the Eastern European collective security region as a whole,” said Pavel Muraveiko.
The chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces also noted that Western states are now busy revisiting strategic concepts and doctrines. “Today, logistics systems are actively developed and deployed, weapons and equipment depots are set up, contingents are dispatched to our borders, and the economies of neighboring countries are getting openly militarized. The unjustified large-scale use of military force in the Middle East, the violation of the borders of sovereign states and the international law. All this is happening with the tacit consent of the international and Western communities. We have gathered a large conference to assess the processes taking place in the world, develop common approaches to assessing the military, political and strategic situation, work out recommendations for the relevant military departments on improving the national armed forces," he emphasized.

"This is not the first time that Minsk has hosted the discussion of defense and security issues within the framework of the CSTO. We have put together a scientific and practical platform that brings together experts, the scientific community and military practitioners with an aim to design modern approaches to countering risks, challenges and threats," Pavel Muraveiko said.

Pavel Muraveiko commented on the U.S. president's decision to supply anti-personnel mines to Ukraine. "There was a system of checks and balances in the world. It included a ban on the use of anti-personnel mines in present-day conflicts. The decision to supply such mines to Ukraine is another violation of the balance of power, an escalation of the means of destruction. We should take this into account, because no one gives a guarantee that such weapons will not be used against us as well," he stressed.
