MP: National unity is crucial

MINSK, 14 September (BelTA) – National unity is a must, Gennady Davydko, Chairman of the Standing Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives, said at a round-table session to discuss inter-ethnic peace in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“The unity of people is of paramount importance, because the first thing all enemies of any country, of any positive development will do is to disunite people. Now we are absolutely aware of the importance of this matter. And we understand that we need to forge national cohesion and make our society more homogeneous through melting together all groups of society on religious, ethnic, age, conceptual and political grounds. I am not ready to unite with those who do not share my values, Christian values, who are against a strong state. How can I join them? I cannot have common ground with those who are against the institution of the family, against the welfare state model. I am ready to argue with them, but not team up with them. And it is very important to discuss this matter in detail, so I welcome the participants of the round-table session and wish them fruitful work,” the MP said.

The House of Representatives is hosting a session to discuss inter-ethnic peace and harmony in Belarus on 14 September. The event is held in the run-up to the Day of People's Unity and is meant to consolidate the Belarusian society on the basis of the ideas of the country's sovereignty and independence.
