MP: Color revolutions are a common threat to former USSR republics

MINSK, 28 January (BelTA) – The threat of color revolutions is common for the countries of the post-Soviet space, Oleg Gaidukevich, member of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, told the ONT TV channel, BelTA informs.

According to the MP, the events that took place in Belarus and Kyrgyzstan last year are directly related to the current protests in Russia.

“This is geopolitics. The first task was to create a belt of instability around the Russian Federation, and afterwards to spread this instability to the territory of Russia itself. Therefore, the threat of color revolutions, attempts to turn the life of people around through a coup d'etat are common for all countries of the post-Soviet space, and these threats have not gone anywhere since the collapse of the USSR in 1991,” Oleg Gaidukevich said.

He is convinced that attempts to stir up tensions in Belarus will continue, because the effectiveness of protests in Russia depends on how things will evolve in Belarus. Therefore, it is now extremely important to improve the legislation, which should become a barrier against attempts to influence the situation in Belarus, the politician stressed. According to him, it makes sense to pass a law on foreign agents. Similar laws are already in force in Russia.

In turn, political analyst Aleksandr Shpakovsky believes that the protests in Russia will continue and their consequences are still unpredictable. “This technology is very common for many states. Let's recall how, for example, the government in Ukraine was overthrown. Back then one of the memes was the Mezhyhirya Residence of Yanukovych. Now we are also talking about some mansion that allegedly belongs to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The organizers of these protests accentuate social inequalities, something very painful for Russian people, and play them up,” he noted.
