MINSK, 22 April (BelTA) - The Belarusian People's Congress is a body of truly people’s power, Chairperson of the Standing Commission on Legislation of the House of Representatives Marina Lenchevskaya told reporters, BelTA has learned.
Marina Lenchevskaya was nominated as a candidate for the Presidium of the Belarusian People's Congress at a meeting of the Council of the House of Representatives.
"The Belarusian People's Congress is the highest body of democracy, with a constitutional status. It shall make strategic decisions for the country. At its first meeting the Belarusian People's Congress will consider such important documents for the country as the National Security Concept and the Military Doctrine. New challenges and threats are emerging, and we must respond to them in time," Marina Lenchevskaya said. “It is very important that the Belarusian People's Congress is a body of truly people’s power. I would say that in our country we have a dictatorship of people's power. This is the right policy. All the most important decisions for our country will be made by people, and this is how we will move forward. We will cope with all difficulties, challenges and threats."
The Presidium of the Belarusian People's Congress will be a working body, the MP noted. "This is an additional responsibility for every member of the presidium," she stressed. “The Presidium shall carry out really serious work. Because during the period between sessions the Presidium shall have very serious powers. It shall have the right to initiate issues of legitimacy of the elections of the president and the Parliament. It is the Presidium that will consider the issues related to the Supreme Court, the Constitutional Court, the Central Election Commission and a number of others, which will need to be resolved quickly and efficiently. I am sure that the Presidium of the Belarusian People's Congress shall be composed exclusively of professional, brave people, patriots of their country and, most importantly, those who love their people and the Republic of Belarus."
The first meeting of the seventh Belarusian People's Congress will be held on 24-25 April. The delegates will elect the chairman of the Belarusian People's Congress, his deputy and members of the Presidium of the Belarusian People's Congress.
