MP: Belarus-Uzbekistan interparliamentary contacts gained pace after 2018

MINSK, 19 February (BelTA) – Since 2018, there has been an uptick in interparliamentary interaction between Belarus and Uzbekistan, member of the Standing Committee on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Sergei Dik said at a roundtable “Uzbekistan and Belarus, a time-tested partnership” in BelTA’s press center.

“I have been lucky to visit Uzbekistan several times. Since 2018, there has been a surge in inter-parliamentary interaction,” the deputy said.

Over the past years, senior parliamentarians of the two countries have exchanged visits several times. Parliamentary friendship groups have been established and their work has gathered steam. Online meetings have been held several times to discuss various areas of cooperation.

“First of all, Uzbekistan is a strategic partner of Belarus in Central Asia, and our president emphasized it during the visit [official visit to Uzbekistan in February 2024]. This is a very fair statement, and the testimony to the strategic nature of this partnership is the friendly relations between our presidents and constructive interparliamentary contacts. All Belarusians who visited Uzbekistan received a very warm welcome there,” said Sergei Dik.

He also noted that the parties support each other in the SCO and BRICS, and Uzbekistan is stepping up cooperation with the EAEU. “We strive to reach one billion [in trade]. And our presidents made a point of this,” added Sergei Dik.
