Mother from refugee camp at Belarusian border: I'm going to Europe for the sake of my kids' future

GRODNO, 12 November (BelTA) – Many are going to Europe for the sake of their kids' future, a mother of many from the refugee camp at the Belarusian-Polish border, told BelTA.

A large group of migrants moving towards the Belarusian-Polish border was noticed not far from the border crossing Bruzgi in the morning on 8 November. Most of the migrants are Kurds from Iraq. The migrants have been unable to enter Poland so far. They set up a camp near the Polish border line. The camp is getting more robust, huts made of tree branches are being built near regular tents. The delivery of water and firewood has been organized. Humanitarian aid is regularly delivered.

“Nevertheless, the conditions are terrible. It is cold, we lack food and basic necessities for kids,” said Khanda, the mother of many. She has four kids, including one, who is very little. The woman said the children are sick and she lacks medications to help them. She also needs aid: she suffers from asthma but has no inhaler.

The family left Iraqi Kurdistan fearing for their lives. “No work, no living conditions, the overall situation is dangerous. This is why we are going to Germany. To get a better life, primarily for the kids,” the woman said. She does not understand why she cannot cross the border since the family does not intend to settle down in Poland.

The number of people in the refugee camp is estimated at over 3,000, including about 500 kids and babies. The number of people is growing. Most of the refugees are Iraqi citizens, Kurds, but there are also representatives of other countries.
