Mobile carriers continue testing discounted roaming services between Belarus, Russia

MINSK, 12 January (BelTA) – Discounts on mobile communications in a roaming mode between Russia and Belarus will continue being tested in 2021, the news agency TASS quoted a number of Russian mobile carriers as saying.

Belarus and Russia agreed to reduce the cost of interstate calls in the Union State of Belarus and Russia from $0.3 to $0.015 per minute from 1 November till the end of 2020. According to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksei Overchuk, plans were made to introduce permanent comfortable prices for roaming calls as from 2021.

According to the Russian mobile carrier MegaFon, the test period for studying intricacies of roaming traffic between Belarus and Russia has been extended till the end of 2021. The mobile carriers MTS and Beeline also confirmed that discounts on roaming services will stay in effect in 2021. Tele2 said that results of the test period had been recognized as a success, this is why the sides decided to prolong the discounted tariffs till the end of 2021.

Representatives of Russia's top four mobile carriers were previously quoted as saying that tariffs on incoming and outgoing calls, texts, and Internet traffic in the Union State of Belarus and Russia were reduced by several times on 1 November 2020.

As part of the test period Russian and Belarusian mobile carriers are working to iron out interaction issues, testing communications channels and billing systems in order to make sure roaming traffic is correctly processed and billed.
