Mitskevich names Belarusian People’s Congress competences

MINSK, 1 April (BelTA) - Head of the Secretariat of the Belarusian People's Congress Valery Mitskevich spoke about the competences of the Belarusian People’s Congress in a new episode of BelTA’s The Nation Speaks project.

According to him, granting the Belarusian People’s Congress the constitutional status of the supreme representative body of the people's power is a new milestone in the country’s development. “This is a new body, which, of course, will make decisions differently,” said Valery Mitskevich. “For example, the procedure of appointing judges of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts. They are also included in the congress as delegates. They are very experienced, highly-qualified specialists. The Belarusian People’s Congress will elect judges of the Constitutional and Supreme Courts. The procedure envisages 1,200 people taking part in the election and the candidates will have to introduce themselves. Surely there will be people in the hall who know how the particular candidate worked in previous years in his previous positions.”

Now it is a slightly different procedure, the head of the secretariat said. “It has always been a complicated process. Earlier, the president made decisions, candidates were submitted to him for consideration. Now a collective decision will be taken. No one has canceled the procedure. It will be quite complex and scrupulous,” he added.
