Minsk oldest woman is 106

MINSK, 26 September (BelTA) – Minsk oldest woman is 106, Zhanna Romanovich, head of the labor, employment and social security department at the Minsk City Hall, said during a press conference “The Day of Older Persons in Minsk: events and actions” on 26 September, BelTA has learned.

A total of 64 Minsk citizens are now over 100 years old. More than 6,000 of the citizens are over 90. About 479,500 recipients of pensions are registered with the employment and social security agencies at the Minsk City Hall. Some 443,000 Minskers (22% of the capital's population) are retirees.

“The population in Minsk, and Belarus as a whole, is aging. So the priority task of the state and Minsk authorities is to take care of seniors, to improve the quality of life and quality of services,” Zhanna Romanovich noted.

Women are outnumbering men when it comes to reaching 60 years and more. Average life expectancy in Minsk is 76.5 years. Women live almost eight years longer than men.

In order to provide seniors and people with disabilities with a comfortable lifestyle, the city is creating barrier-free environment, purchasing low-floor transport vehicles. Local social services centers offer hobby clubs.
