Minsk metro passenger numbers up by over 10m people in 2019

MINSK, 15 January (BelTA) – Minsk metro carried 293,721,000 passengers in 2019, which was up by 10,361,000 over 2018, BelTA learned from representatives of the Minsk metro.

The Moskovskaya Line was busier and handled over 169.1 million passengers. The Avtozavodskaya Line saw 124.6 million journeys. The busiest stations were Kamennaya Gorka (over 22.4 million passengers) and Lenina Square (almost 19.8 million). Other bustling stations included Uruchye, Yakub Kolas Square, Mogilevskaya, and Nemiga.

Stations of the Avtozavodskaya Line were among the least busy stations. In 2019, the Kupalovskaya station handled over 1.9 million passengers, Pervomayskaya – over 3.4 million, and Molodezhnaya – 5.5 million. The least crowded stations of the Moskovskaya Line were the stations Park Chelyuskintsev (almost 5.4 million passengers) and Grushevka (just short of 6.2 million).

Popularity of metro tokens as a method of payment started to decline. In 2018, 35% of passengers used tokens. In 2019 this number dropped to 30%. Meanwhile, the use of contactless bank cards and mobile devices has grown. Passengers used contactless cards more than 19.6 million times in 2019, which accounted for over 6% of all methods of payment.
