Minsk hosts events to commemorate Nemiga stampede victims

MINSK, 30 May (BelTA) - Memorial events are being held in Minsk to commemorate the 26th anniversary of the Nemiga tragedy, where 53 people lost their lives in an underpass on 30 May 1999, BelTA has learned.

In the morning, the Divine Liturgy was held in the Holy Spirit Cathedral to commemorate the victims. Then, worshippers joined a procession to the site of the tragedy near the Nemiga metro station. They laid flowers on the steps of the pass. A memorial service was held there.

A memorial in the form of bronze flowers was set up outside an entrance to the Nemiga metro station, containing 40 roses and 13 tulips. It bears an inscription: "53 scars on the heart of Belarus". A memorial plaque with the names of the victims is also displayed in the crypt of the Church of All Saints. Later today, another memorial service will be held at the church.

Local resident Olga Narovskaya, who brought a bouquet of red roses to the memorial site, said: "I was just 11 years old when this happened, but I still remember how the entire country mourned. Since then, I try to come here every year. This is our common sorrow and our memory."

The tragedy occurred on the evening of 30 May 1999, when a sudden torrential rain and hail caused several thousand people gathered near the Sport Palace for a concert to seek shelter in the underpass. As a result of the stampede, dozens were injured, and 53 people lost their lives.
