Migrant center near Belarus' Polotsk to be ready in 2021

VITEBSK, 14 December (BelTA) - A migrant accommodation center with all necessary amenities is being built on the area of the Polotsk border detachment, Lieutenant Colonel Denis Glebko, official representative of the Polotsk border detachment, told BelTA.

The construction of the center began in summer 2020 under the international technical assistance project “Helping Belarus address the phenomenon of increasing numbers of irregular migrants”. The center will accommodate about 40 people. The center will have several sections, including the section for women, children and families. A workout zone will be equipped on its territory. Plans are in place to complete the construction in spring 2021.

The project “Helping Belarus address the phenomenon of increasing numbers of irregular migrants” is financed by the EU and implemented by the IOM Mission in Belarus jointly with the Internal Affairs Ministry and the State Border Committee. The main goal is to support Belarus in the development and implementation of policies and strategies on irregular migration and asylum in order to come closer to European and international standards. The project runs through February 2022, with a budget of €7 million.
