MFA: Lithuania refuses to communicate with Belarus on radioactive waste disposal project

MINSK, 7 October (BelTA) – Lithuania has refused to maintain almost any contacts with Belarus regarding the construction of a repository for radioactive waste, Belarusian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Yuri Ambrazevich said on the air of the ONT TV channel on 6 October, BelTA has learned.

He noted that Lithuania continues speculations over the Belarusian nuclear plant and its safety. It is decommissioning Ignalina NPP and is going to build or is already building a radioactive waste repository where it plans to dispose of radioactive waste from all over the European Union.

"Lithuania fails to fulfill its own international obligations," Yuri Ambrazevich emphasized. "The Lithuanian government refused to maintain almost any contacts with the Belarusian authorities. We know that the expertise of people who worked at Ignalina NPP has been lost. You need qualified specialists to work with radioactive waste too."

"We have no information regarding whether or not they are conducting any measurements," he added.
