MINSK, 3 November (BelTA) – Two people were killed and 14 more injured in a shooting in Vienna on 2 November. Belarusian diplomats are in contact with the Austrian law enforcement agencies to check whether there are any Belarusian nationals among the victims, the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on its Twitter account, BelTA has learned.
According to TASS, several gunmen armed with rifles opened fire in six different locations in the Austrian capital on Monday evening. One of the shootings took place near the synagogue. Two people were killed. There is a police officer among the fourteen persons that have been injured.
One gunman was killed and police are searching for the others. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz called it a terror attack. According to him, the reason for the shooting is still unclear. The American organization SITE Intelligence group claims that Jihadists say Vienna attack is “part of the bill" for Austrian involvement in U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic state.
Vienna residents have been advised to avoid visiting public places. Parents have been told not to take their children to school. Austria, in agreement with its neighboring countries, has strengthened border controls.
