Mezentsev: Union State currency is not on agenda

MOSCOW, 30 January (BelTA) – The issue of the common currency in the Belarus-Russia Union State is not on the agenda. There is a need to improve the use of national currencies in transactions between the two countries, State Secretary of the Union State Dmitry Mezentsev said in an interview to the Russia 24 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“The two countries have reached an unprecedented level of mutual trade in national currencies, and the common currency issue is not on the agenda,” Dmitry Mezentsev said. “Our major focus is on improving trade, the rules of applying the decisions in the industrial policy, which help remove barriers, avoid setting up unnecessary competing industries, develop common production chains,” he said.

“A competitive environment of similar groups of goods was created in the previous years. From now on, we will be fundamentally moving away from this,” he said.

According to Dmitry Mezentsev, Belarus and Russia approved the main guidelines to implement the Union State Treaty in 2024-2026 at the 29th meeting of the Supreme State Council. The document contains 11 sections, including macroeconomics, common financial policy, common transportation and energy markets. “The parties are forming and presenting to the world their common energy market and balanced approaches. Both The Five [EAEU] and the CIS have developed nothing of the find yet,” the state secretary stressed.
