Mercenary: SBU among those who help militants plot invasion into Belarus

MINSK, 22 January (BelTA) – The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), as well as special services of Poland and Lithuania, are helping Belarusian militants plan an invasion into Belarus, the Belarus 1 TV channel learned from Vasily Veremeichik, a mercenary who participated in the hostilities in Ukraine as part of the Kalinovsky Regiment, recognized as a terrorist organization in Belarus, BelTA reports.

The Belarusian mercenary fled Ukraine to Lithuania, from there to Vietnam where he was arrested and extradited under a criminal case.

According to Vasily Veremeichik, the Security Service of Ukraine is helping  militants devise a plan to invade Belarus. “The SBU keeps tabs on what is happening on the border [with Belarus]. Accordingly, they have information about all border areas. And, of course, they get assistance from special services of Poland and Lithuania who are interested in this the most,” he said.

According to the mercenary, the key success factor of such an operation is taking the opponent aback. Malorita District is seen as one of possible routes of invasion, in particular, the settlements of Mokrany and Sushitnitsa. Militants plan to crush Belarusian security forces or 'enter into direct contact with them'.

When asked what mercenaries plan to do with the civilian population, Vasily Veremeichik said: “In such a situation, everyone acts according to the laws of wartime. Accordingly, civilians will not be treated with kid gloves.”

Upon reaching Malorita, terrorists plan to seize some building to use it as a headquarters later. In addition, uniforms of the Armed Forces of Belarus or the Ministry of Internal Affairs have been prepared for them. This will allow groups of terrorists to come close to the designated building, for example, a police office. Vasily Veremeichik saw such uniforms in warehouses.

According to the mercenary, the facilities that terrorists plan to seize include a railway station, gas stations, a communications tower and a bus station. To maintain control of the town, checkpoints with heavy weapons and points for mortar crews are to be set up. They also want to invite foreign journalists to create the appearance of support for militants by civilians.

“This will allow conducting a limited intervention, getting armed and material support, and calling on all citizens of the world to join in as 'foreign volunteers',” he explained.

The Kalinovsky Regiment itself is not capable of scaling up an offensive on its own, so it plans to request support from 'foreign volunteers'. Thus, Vasily Veremeichik remarked, the invasion scenario is similar to the operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in Kursk Oblast.
