Lukashenko, Khabirov discuss project to increase bison herds in Bashkortostan

MINSK, 7 February (BelTA) – Belarusian bison from Belovezhskaya Pushcha have already given birth to five calves in Bashkortostan. this important environmental project to grow bison herds was discussed at the meeting with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko, Head of the Republic of Bashkortostan Radiy Khabirov told journalists, BelTA has learned.

"Aleksandr Grigorievich also asked me about the status of the project. This scientific environmental initiative to increase the number of bison in Bashkortostan is very important to us. Thanks to the support of the president, we bought one herd of 18 bison. Now we have 23 bison, including five calves. This is a significant and heartwarming project of our friendship and cooperation," Radiy Khabirov said.

As BelTA reported earlier, Head of the Belarus President Property Management Directorate Yuri Nazarov proposed the idea to launch such a project during a working meeting with Head of Bashkortostan Radiy Khabirov in Minsk in January 2023.

The number of bison in Belovezhskaya Pushcha allows selling them to other national parks and reserves. In May 2023, the first nine bison were transported from Belovezhskaya Pushcha to Bashkortostan. Another batch arrived in December of the same year. In Bashkortostan, bison were placed in a reserve in a protected area under the care of specialists. In June last year, the first Belarusian calf was born in Bashkortostan.
