Lithuanian politician: Lithuania has no legitimately elected president

MINSK, 13 May (BelTA) – Lithuania has no legitimately elected president, former Lithuanian presidential candidate Eduardas Vaitkus said at a press conference in BelTA’s press center in Minsk on 13 May.

According to Eduardas Vaitkus, despite the actions and statements of Lithuanian politicians, not all ordinary Lithuanians “have gone crazy and want war." "There are people who want an independent and free Lithuania, where Lithuanians would be the masters of their land, not the way it is now," the former presidential candidate said.

The politician stated that Lithuania has no legitimately elected president. This is due to numerous irregularities that were committed during the election campaign. Eduardas Vaitkus gave a concrete example of one of the dubious mechanisms operating during the election campaign. According to him, a candidate needs to collect 20,000 voters' signatures to run in the election. This could be done both online and directly by collecting voters' signatures. At the same time, voters were not authenticated during electronic voting, as is prescribed by the Lithuanian laws.

"It could have been done by bots. The Lithuanian CEC confirmed that there was no proper authentication. But nothing was done regarding this. After all, if signatures are not authenticated, they should be excluded. If they are excluded, it means that no candidate (including me) collected 20,000 signatures. So, the election should have been suspended and another one should have been announced. But the CEC decided that everything was in order and this error could be ignored," Eduardas Vaitkus said.
