MINSK, 3 December (BelTA) - Lithuanian carriers intend to hold a protest in Vilnius on 10 December in response to the situation with trucks stuck in Belarus, Head of the Lithuanian Association of Road Carriers (LINAVA) Erlandas Mikėnas said, BelTA learned from Lithuanian media.
He noted growing dissatisfaction and anger among independent carriers whose trucks remain stranded in Belarus following Lithuania’s border closure. There is an increase in protest sentiment among Linava members and independent truckers. According to Erlandas Mikėnas, some of the independents even considered blocking Lithuania's major roads and streets in Vilnius. However, the association plans to organize a peaceful demonstration. “Our decision to organize a peaceful protest to draw the attention of the government and society so that carriers are understood may help avoid drastic measures and channel energy into a more constructive direction,” he added, urging that an effective solution be found as soon as possible.
Erlandas Mikėnas stated that since the start of the freight transport crisis, losses, according to transport companies, have already reached nearly €100 million. “We began calculating the losses, and the figures are alarming: they are approaching €100 million, and this number grows every day,” he remarked. The association’s head also pointed out the daily loss of income, as each idle truck would normally generate about €10,000 per day.
Earlier, State Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic of Belarus Aleksandr Volfovich stated that Lithuania’s leadership does not want to engage in constructive political dialogue with Belarus.
