MINSK, 15 October (BelTA) – The Lithuanian Seimas has approved the proposal to denounce the customs cooperation agreement with Belarus, reads a press release published on the website of the Lithuanian parliament.
Some 81 members of the Lithuanian Seimas voted unanimously for the initiative. After it is registered it will be reviewed by the Foreign Affairs Committee. The Parliament will revisit the issue during the parliamentary session on 5 November.
The Lithuanian Finance Minister Gintare Skaiste said that bilateral agreements between the countries are "applied only to a limited extent," and in fact, cross-border trade and economic cooperation with Belarus has been completely suspended. "We propose to legitimize the current state in which this cooperation does not really exist, and denounce the cooperation agreement," she said.
The agreement on customs cooperation with Belarus was signed by Lithuania in 1996. In early October, the Seimas had already denounced three international agreements concerning economic cooperation between Lithuania, Belarus and Russia.
