"On Point"
MINSK, 16 March (BelTA) - If peace in Ukraine cannot be achieved as a result of agreements between Moscow, Washington and Kiev, U.S. President Donald Trump has nothing to lose anyway, political scientist Piotr Petrovsky said in a recent episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Discussing the topic of negotiations on Ukraine between Washington, Moscow and Kiev, the political scientist noted that an important caveat should be made. “If Trump does not negotiate peace, does he lose anything? Yes, he won't get the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump says that it is not his fault that Kiev doesn't want to negotiate. If they want to fight, let them fight, but the USA won't give them any money. Since Putin offered cooperation on rare earth metals, let's lift at least part of the sanctions and negotiate with him. And let Europe pay for its favorite war,” Piotr Petrovsky explained the logic of the U.S. president.
According to the political scientist, Donald Trump will thus force the Europeans to pay for the conflict themselves: “They do not lift any sanctions against Russia. They will buy gas, oil, minerals from other countries at triple the price. While Europe's industrial potential will slip away to the United States. The USA are getting everything they need.”
In case some kind of peace agreements are signed, Piotr Petrovsky added, the USA will still have the upper hand. “On what terms will it be signed? The Europeans are lifting sanctions, but they are doing it under the USA’s terms. Oil pipelines, gas pipelines, imports of Russian raw materials are through U.S. companies. What can we see here? Approval and full formation of the tariff, settlement and maximum profits,” he said.
According to the political scientist, in this case Russia should stand up for itself and get maximum favorable conditions. “Nord Stream has nothing to do with the USA. The same is true about the Druzhba pipeline. All this should remain as it is. Only Nord Stream needs be repaired. And security must be ensured. These are the main points regarding who and what will get anything as a result,” Piotr Petrovsky said.
