Lebedev: CIS members states effectively cooperate on counter-terrorism

MINSK, 10 April (BelTA) – The CIS has built a reliable mechanism for interstate coordination on counter-terrorism, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev said in his greeting to the 17th meeting of heads of the national anti-terrorist centers of the CIS member states in Moscow, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

In his greetings, Sergei Lebedev noted that the CIS has built a reliable mechanism for interstate coordination on counter-terrorism, which makes it possible to approximate national legislation, conduct scientific research and professional training, sahre information and counteract the expansion of extremist ideology.

"The units you are in charge of are implementing measures on a regular basis to curb the activities of international terrorist organizations and suppress potentially dangerous terrorist attacks. An important component of your practical cooperation is joint anti-terrorist exercises," the secretary general said.

Sergei Lebedev recalled that last year's Eurasia Anti-Terror 2023 exercise was for the first time united by a single concept with the exercises of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This, in his opinion, corresponds to the modern concept of aligning the activities of CIS, CSTO and SCO bodies.

"International terrorism is incredibly difficult to curb at a time of continuous escalation of geopolitical tensions and destruction of the fundamental norms and values of international law. This is evidenced by the latest monstrous terrorist attack on unarmed civilians in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow. The very fact that it happened shows us that we must increase vigilance, further improve joint activities and consolidate efforts to counter terrorist and extremist manifestations," Sergei Lebedev stressed.
